Draft Certification Standards Available For Public Input

Forest certification is a management tool that clearly identifies forest owners and managers adhering to good forest practices and at the same time rewarding them. The reward is through market incentives. Forest certification as a process of assessing a forest and providing the findings in form of labeling the products has been used in many countries with encouraging results. Standards against which the practices are measured are developed by various stakeholders. Role of communities in Forests Act 2005

Parliament recently passed the Forests Bill after a decade of serious negotiations, among the Government, Forest Communities and Civil Society representatives. This Act is unique from the preceding one in that it recognizes the role of communities in effective forest resources management. It provides for the decentralization of
forest management to the local community level, giving communities both the access to use and manage their forests in accordance with their own management plans as well as within the legal provisions of the Act.

This paper seeks to highlight the various roles to be played out by the communities as spelt out in the Forests Act 2005. Download
